Viking Gulfstar Fishing Charter Review & Editor's Notes

Gag Grouper

The Sport-fishing capital of the world does not bear its name without reason.  Grouper, Seabass, Cobia, Key West Snapper, and Shark are the among the impressive fish hauled in on even the shortest trips. Expand the trip a bit and even greater delights are found:  Tuna, Wahoo, Kingfish, Swordfish and Mahi Mahi to name a few.

The Gag Grouper are a popular catch, one of the most widely distributed fish in the Florida waters.  Mature fish are typically found at depths of 60' or more in rocky bottom areas, reefs and drop-off walls  Young Groupers are more likely to sette into inshore waters with seagrass beds or mangrove forests.

Cobia

Nearly every charter encounters this incredible fish.  The Cobia has a jutting lower jaw the extends past the upper one.  It is long and slim fish with a dark lateral stripe extending through eye to tail.  Live bait, shrimp, mullet and jigs are all typical approaches to landing Cobia.  They are a pelagic, solitary fish that congregate near structures such as reefs, wrecks, and buoys.

Red Snapper

Another prominent resident of the waterways are the beautiful Red Snapper.  A glowing pink/red atop with white below and a red eye, the Snapper reaches significant sizes.  A long-lived fish weights of 35 pounds or more are not uncommon.

Shark

For great fishing action, Sharks are hard to beat. Hard-hitting and fierce-fighting this prolific fish delights anglers of all ages and abilities.  Found throughout the waters fished by the Gulfstar, the multiple varieties of fish offer a ready fishing option.
